PLEIADES (THE MYTH AND ASTRO-AESTHETICS)

Pleiades, mitológicamente eram as 7 filhas de Atlas (o titã que carrega os céus para sempre nos seus ombros, punição por ter afrontado Júpiter), elas chamam-se: Maia, Electra, Taygete, Celeno, Merope, Asterope, e Alcyone. Segundo a história, elas transformaram-se em gaivotas, depois em estrelas para poderem escapar de Orion o caçador, que estava apaixonado por elas.

Noutro mito, elas são associadas com as Naiads, que eram sereias ou espíritos das águas que curavam, e alimentavam, mas uma vez dessas, atrairam um jovem Hylas, e desapareu para sempre.

Pleiades ou M45, não é uma constelação por sí, mas sim, faz parte da constelação de Touro/Taurus. Pleiades parece uma seta no céu, e a sua ponta, a estrela Electra (17 Tauri) está direcionada para Hammal (Alpha Arietis) na constelação de Aries.

Pleiades no céu aparece como uma aglomeração de 7 estrelas envolvidas em névoa. A 7ª estrela está bem escondida para o olho nú, para quem não tem a visão treinada só consegue observar 6 estrelas. Ironicamente o mesmo acontece para quem quer ver além do horizonte, só vé quem quer, e quem se esforça para além das teias do passado académico.

Pleiades in the myth were the 7 daughters of Atlas ( the titan who was punished to carry the skies on his shoulders forever, for having challenged Jupiter), they were, Maia, Electra, Taygete, Celeno, Merope, Asterope, and Alcyone. Acording to the myth, they turned into seagulls, and then into stars, in order to escape the passionate intentions of the great hunter, Orion.

In the other myth, they are associated with the Naiads, who were water nymphs, that cured, and nortured, but one day they lured a young man called Hylas, and he was never to be seen again.

Pleiades or M45, is not a constellation by itself, but it's a starry system inside the constellation of Taurus. They appear like an arrow in the sky, and the sharp bit, which is the star Electra (17 Tauri) is pointing towards Hammal ( Alpha Arietis) in the constellation of Aries.

Pleiades in the sky appears as an aglomeration of 7 stars evolved in mist. The 7th star is well hidden for the naked eye, for someone who doesn't have a well trained vision, can only see 6 stars. Ironically, the same happens for somebody who wants to see beyond the horizon, only sees who wants to see, and who struggles beyond the webs of the academic past.
